Carbon vs fibreglass padel racket faces: what the difference actually feels like
The face is the part of the racket that touches the ball, so it shapes the feel more than almost anything else. There are only two materials worth discussing, and one of them comes in several grades.
Fibreglass
Fibreglass is flexible. On contact the face deforms slightly and springs back, which pushes the ball out with a little free power and absorbs some of the shock before it reaches your arm.
Good: comfortable, cheap, easy on the elbow, feels powerful without much technique.
Less good: vague. Because the face flexes, you get less information back about exactly where and how you hit the ball, which makes fine placement harder. Fibreglass also fatigues faster. The flex gradually goes out of it, and a heavily used fibreglass racket can feel dead within a season or two.
Carbon fibre
Carbon is stiff. It barely deforms, so the energy you put in comes back as pace and information rather than being soaked up. You feel exactly where on the face you made contact.
Good: precise, responsive, holds its properties far longer, grips the ball better for spin, considerably more durable against wall contact.
Less good: unforgiving of a bad swing, and stiffer means more of the shock reaches your arm unless the core compensates.

What 3K, 12K and 18K mean
The K number describes the carbon weave: how many thousands of filaments are bundled into each strand before it is woven. It is a description of the weave, not a quality score, but in practice it correlates with stiffness and feel.
- 3K. A tighter, smaller weave. Slightly more flexible and forgiving than higher grades. A good balance of comfort and response, and a sensible step up from fibreglass.
- 12K. A larger weave, noticeably stiffer. More pace on the ball and more feedback. Suits a confident player with a repeatable swing.
- 18K. The stiffest of the three. Maximum transfer of whatever you put in, maximum feedback, least forgiveness. Excellent for a strong player, punishing for a beginner.
The important point: higher is not better, it is different. An 18K racket in the hands of someone still learning to time the ball will produce worse results than a 3K racket, and a sorer arm.
Surface texture matters too
Separately from the material, faces are either smooth or textured. A rough or 3D surface grips the ball for a fraction longer at contact, which is what lets you generate spin. If you want to slice a defensive shot or put topspin on a lob, texture is what makes it possible. All of our rackets use a 3D surface for this reason.
So which should you buy?
- First racket, or any arm history: carbon with a comfortable core, standard weave or 3K.
- Improving and want more from the ball: step up the weave but keep the shape forgiving.
- Strong, consistent, attacking: 12K or 18K, and enjoy it.
What you should not do is buy the highest number you can afford on the assumption that it must be the best racket. That is the most common expensive mistake in padel.
